The team behind this volume comparison

The Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital is staffed by four consultants working inside a tertiary general hospital. Tongchun Mao, MD, is responsible for the medical review of this site and performs breast volume surgery by both routes. A comparison of this kind also involves the other three: complex and revision cases, the skin and scar assessment around a breast or a donor site, and the aftercare that shapes how a result matures.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Breast volume surgery · implants and autologous fat · the surgical decision

Dr. Tongchun Mao is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and head of its aesthetic surgery service at Chongqing West District Hospital, and he is the physician responsible for this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, he has rooted his clinical practice for more than 20 years and personally performs over 700 operations a year.

Both routes to breast volume arrive at the same consultation, and Dr. Mao treats them as answers to different questions rather than as versions of one operation. An implant adds a volume that can be planned in advance and commits the patient to a device that is not a lifetime one; fat transfer uses the patient’s own tissue, of which only a proportion survives. His part of this site is the measurement that decides which of those two sets of limits a patient can live with, and he regards an assessment that ends in no operation at all as one that worked.

Clinical focus

  • Breast augmentation with silicone gel-filled or saline-filled implants
  • Breast augmentation with autologous fat transfer, including staged sessions
  • Fat harvest and donor-site contouring at the abdomen, flanks and thighs
  • Breast lift (mastopexy), including lift combined with volume
  • Implant surveillance, exchange and removal within the same centre

Academic roles & achievements

  • Member, Rhinoplasty and Trunk Tumor Groups, Chinese Medical Association Plastic Surgery Branch
  • Member, Chongqing Medical Aesthetics Quality Control Center; Member, Chongqing Medical Accident / Disability Assessment Expert Pools
  • Deputy Chair, Chongqing Shapingba District Medical Aesthetics Committee
  • Published 5 SCI papers, holds 7 national patents, and has participated in 4 research projects
  • Repeatedly named an “Outstanding Young Physician” at Xinqiao Hospital since joining in 2005

Two routes, two sets of terms

An implant offers a volume that can be stated before the operation, and a device that will most likely be exchanged at some point. Fat transfer offers tissue that is entirely your own, and a volume that cannot be stated in advance because only part of the graft survives. Neither set of terms is lighter than the other; they are simply different, and which one you can live with is what the assessment is for.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Plastic surgery · complex cases · revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital, and previously served as Deputy Chief of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University. On this site he is the second opinion a complex or previously operated breast is brought to.

His part of the decision is the one patients rarely ask for: whether a volume operation should proceed at all, and what a breast that already contains a device or grafted fat can safely tolerate the second time.

Clinical focus

  • Revision and reconstruction after unsatisfactory breast surgery
  • Complex wound repair and tertiary-hospital surgical support
  • Scar revision and comprehensive scar management

Dr. Yongbo Jia is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and head of dermatology at Chongqing West District Hospital, trained at the Institute of Dermatology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Clinical focus

  • Dermatological assessment before breast and body surgery
  • Management of skin disease that affects surgical healing
  • Postoperative skin complications and barrier repair

Comparing the two routes, and unsure what your breasts need?

An assessment measures what a website cannot: tissue cover, position, and how much fat could be harvested. We will say plainly what each option would change in your case, what each would not, and when the honest answer is neither.
